On-shore breezes that push the marine layer into town are responsible for foggy summer mornings, and temperate sunny days on the California coast, as seen here in Laguna Beach. In recent years, rising inland temperatures have stretched what used to be just "June gloom" to "May gray" and even are bringing us "Overcast Aprils." Because of this environmental shift, coastal gardeners are facing tough challenges as pathogens and pests are increasing and changing rapidly.
The best approach to growing interesting, tasty, and healthy varieties organically, is to plant genetically resistant crops and use creative methods to tame diseases like Verticillium, Fusarium, Powder Mildew, and Downy Mildew, among others. The tomatoes pictured here were planted by the gardeners of the South Laguna Community Garden Park and have extremely high fungal and bacterial disease resistance.
Hi, I'm Carly Sciacca. Over the past 25 years or so, I have been gardening on the California coast, from Santa Barbara to Laguna Beach. Over 15 years ago, I became a member of the South Laguna Community Garden Park On Coast Highway right across the street from the beach in South Laguna. Over the years, I have taken on more roles and am now Assistant Director of the Garden. I've loved helping hundreds of our members learn how to grow thriving vegetables, herbs, and flowers.
I'm excited to introduce you to my favorite varieties through my workshops, and help you create the most rewarding garden you've ever grown!
